CFO & finance support for Indigenous businesses and Development Corporations

Build a finance function you can rely on.

ProfitPath CFO Solutions Inc. helps Indigenous-owned businesses and Development Corporations get their financial reporting back on track, strengthen accounting systems and finance teams, and access experienced CFO leadership when they need it.

From audit readiness and cash management to financing and major business decisions, we help organizations build the financial capacity to manage their businesses and pursue new opportunities.

Led by David Stokes, CPA, CA: more than 15 years of senior finance experience, including 13 years as CFO of Denendeh Investments.

The challenge

When the business has outgrown its finance function.

Indigenous Development Corporations may oversee several operating businesses, investments and joint ventures. Growing Indigenous-owned businesses face different demands as they add staff, projects and financing. In either setting, complexity can grow faster than the systems and people responsible for the numbers.

Even capable finance staff and external accountants can be stretched beyond what existing processes were designed to handle. CEOs, owners and boards still need timely information to manage cash, understand performance and make decisions.

Key challenges

  • Reporting comes too late. Financial statements are months behind, or management cannot get a clear picture of performance when decisions need to be made.
  • Catch-up work takes over. Reconciliations, intercompany balances and audit schedules accumulate until a deadline forces a scramble.
  • Cash is difficult to see. Commitments, transfers and financing needs are hard to assess across operating entities.
  • Too much depends on a few people. When someone leaves or the team is overloaded, undocumented processes and weak handoffs create reporting gaps.
  • Opportunities need deeper financial analysis. New ventures, financing and partnerships move faster than the organization's capacity to evaluate them.

The answer is not always a new hire. It may be a focused finance reset, better processes and experienced leadership working alongside your existing team. ProfitPath helps identify what needs to change, restore reliable financial reporting and build the capacity to keep up.

Who we work with

Finance support for the organizations behind Indigenous businesses.

ProfitPath works with Indigenous Development Corporations and established Indigenous-owned businesses across Western and Northern Canada. We bring hands-on accounting execution and senior financial leadership together, adapting our work to the organization's needs rather than offering a one-size-fits-all CFO package.

Indigenous Development Corporations

Overseeing several operating companies, investments or joint ventures takes more than collecting year-end financial statements. CEOs and boards need a dependable view of each business, cash requirements, intercompany activity and the group's obligations and opportunities.

We help catch up and coordinate accounting across entities, prepare for audit, establish reliable management reporting and provide the financial analysis needed for financing, new ventures and major decisions.

Established Indigenous-owned businesses

As a business grows, its bookkeeping and year-end accounting arrangements may no longer provide everything the owner or management team needs. That doesn't always mean it's time to hire a full-time CFO.

We help strengthen day-to-day finance operations, improve reporting and cash planning, build more dependable processes and provide experienced CFO advice when important decisions arise.

Working with your existing team

We can work alongside your bookkeeper, finance staff and external accountant. Some organizations engage us for a defined catch-up or finance-function project. Others need ongoing finance operations and CFO leadership. The starting point is what your organization actually needs.

What we do

From getting the books caught up to building a stronger finance function.

Some organizations need to recover months of accounting and get ready for audit. Others need dependable day-to-day bookkeeping, a better-functioning finance team or experienced support with significant decisions. ProfitPath provides practical help at each stage.

Services, part one

  • Catch-Up Accounting & Audit Readiness

We tackle accounting backlogs, reconcile bank and intercompany accounts, organize supporting records and prepare the information management and external auditors need. The goal is to restore dependable financial records and a workable foundation for ongoing reporting.

  • Bookkeeping, Reporting & Finance Operations

Reliable monthly accounting should not depend on the owner or CEO chasing down the numbers. We help manage bookkeeping, accounts payable and receivable, payroll coordination, month-end close and regular management reporting, either alongside an internal team or as an outsourced finance function.

  • Build or Rebuild Your Finance Function

We help establish accounting systems, reporting structures, controls, financial workflows and clear responsibilities so the finance function can keep pace as an organization becomes more complex. That can include helping a team operate consistently across multiple companies.

Services, part two

  • Ongoing CFO & Financial Leadership

We work with owners, CEOs and boards on cash forecasts, budgets, financial performance, reporting and the decisions behind the numbers. Organizations gain senior financial leadership without having to build every capability in-house.

  • Financing, Ventures & Strategic Projects

Whether evaluating a financing requirement, investment, acquisition, joint venture or new business, we help management understand the cash requirements, economics, risks and potential returns before making major commitments.

How we work

Start with your priorities. Build the support you need.

Every organization starts in a different place. Some need an urgent accounting catch-up or support preparing for audit. Others want to strengthen their finance team, outsource monthly accounting or get experienced financial leadership for major decisions. We begin by understanding what is happening, then agreeing on a practical way forward.

First contact: start with a conversation

We discuss your organization, immediate pressures and what better financial support would make possible. If there is a fit, we recommend the right next step.

Our three steps

  1. 01

Assess and agree on a plan

For complex or unclear situations, we may begin with a paid assessment of financial records, processes, systems, staffing and reporting. For a clearly defined need, we can move directly to a scoped proposal. Either way, you will know the priorities, responsibilities, deliverables and fees before work begins.

  2. 02

    Stabilize and build

We tackle the practical work: resolving accounting backlogs, establishing reliable reporting, improving workflows and controls, and strengthening the people and systems already in place. We coordinate with your finance staff and external accountants where appropriate.

  3. 03

    Support what's next

Some projects end with a clear handover. Others develop into ongoing bookkeeping, finance operations or CFO leadership, supporting cash planning, management reporting, financing and decisions as your organization evolves.

You do not need to diagnose the finance problem before contacting us. Let's discuss where to start.

Why ProfitPath

Financial leadership grounded in operating experience.

ProfitPath is led by David Stokes, CPA, CA, who brings more than 15 years of senior finance experience, including 13 years as CFO of Denendeh Investments. His work has involved operating businesses, investments and financial decisions with real consequences for owners, CEOs and boards.

That experience shapes our approach. Reliable accounting matters because people need it to manage cash, understand performance and make decisions. CFO advice matters because those decisions cannot wait until every report is perfect. The finance function has to connect both.

What that experience means for you

  • A practical understanding of complex organizations

Experience with multiple businesses, investments and board-level reporting helps us understand the demands placed on finance teams as organizations grow and their structures become more complex.

  • From the books to the boardroom

We see the connection between reconciliations and financial reporting on one hand, and financing, capital allocation and major business decisions on the other. The work needs to hold up at both levels.

  • Support that works with your people

We work alongside the people and external advisers already supporting your organization. The goal is not another set of recommendations. It is better processes, more dependable reporting and financial capacity the organization can use.

Experienced leadership is most valuable when it helps the finance function work better every month, not just when a crisis arrives. Learn More About David

Wealth That Stays

Ideas about business, ownership and the creation of lasting economic power.

The way wealth is created matters. So does who owns the businesses, where profits flow and whether local enterprises grow into lasting institutions.

Wealth That Stays is David Stokes's long-form publication exploring Indigenous economic development, entrepreneurship, capital, ownership and the often-overlooked businesses that shape communities and regional economies. Grounded in experience and written to provoke deeper discussion, the essays examine difficult questions, challenge familiar assumptions and look beyond short-term growth to what endures.

Frequently asked questions

Practical answers before we talk.

We already have a bookkeeper and external accountant. Why would we need ProfitPath?

A bookkeeper and year-end accountant may cover transaction processing, compliance and annual reporting. ProfitPath helps when an organization also needs timely management information, stronger finance processes or experienced CFO leadership. We can work alongside your existing advisers rather than replace them.

Can you help if our accounting records are months behind?

Yes. Catch-up accounting and audit readiness are core parts of our work. We first establish the condition of the records, the number of entities and the most urgent deadlines, then agree on a realistic scope and priorities.

Do you work with organizations that have several companies or subsidiaries?

Yes. Our experience includes the financial reporting and oversight challenges that arise when operating businesses, holding companies, investments and intercompany transactions sit within one group.

Can you help us prepare for an external audit?

We help organize accounting records, complete reconciliations, prepare supporting schedules and coordinate with your external auditor. The independent auditor remains responsible for the audit and its opinion.

Do we have to commit to ongoing CFO services?

No. Some engagements are defined projects, such as catching up accounting records or rebuilding a finance process. Others involve ongoing bookkeeping, finance operations or CFO support. We recommend the arrangement that fits the work.

How are your fees determined?

Fees depend on the work involved, including the condition of the records, number of entities and level of support required. A complex engagement may begin with a paid assessment; a clearly defined need may be scoped directly. We agree on deliverables, responsibilities and fees before work begins.

Where do you work, and can services be delivered remotely?

ProfitPath primarily works with Indigenous businesses and Development Corporations across Western and Northern Canada. Much of the work can be delivered remotely, with on-site support discussed when the engagement calls for it.

Let's talk

Let's start with what's happening in your business.

Whether you're dealing with overdue financial reporting, an overloaded finance team or a major business decision, you don't need to have the solution figured out before reaching out.

In an introductory conversation, we'll learn about your organization, discuss what's most pressing and consider whether ProfitPath is the right fit. If we can help, we'll explain a sensible next step, without asking you to commit to a project or ongoing retainer on that first call.
